How do you access the resources that are indexed in a database?

Often, you will see a link to the full text right there in the search results. Sometimes, the resources is not included in our subscription. In these cases, you can request a scan of the resource using WorldShare, our Interlibrary Loan service (this is different from I-Share). The link to request these items is included in the database.

What is a database?

A database is a collection of information that is organized and retrievable. When we talk about databases in a library, we are usually talking about tools that you can use to search and access published materials such as articles, books, images, videos, etc.

What are the strengths of library databases compared to the internet?

  • Quality Library databases contain published information. This means there has already been some quality control and vetting of information prior to publishing, unlike the internet, where anyone can publish anything.
  • More Information Library databases give you access to information that you cannot find on the general internet.
  • No Additional Cost While free tools like Google Scholar might help you discover materials, you often cannot get them without paying. TIU has already paid to subscribe to our databases, meaning there is no extra cost for you beyond what you already pay to attend TIU.
  • Search Tools Databases offer many ways to limit your search, such as dates, type of publication, subject/topic, and much more. This means you can create more specific searches than you can with a general search engine.

You can access our full list of databases by clicking on "Online Resources" on our home page or you can click here.

Suggested Databases for Research in Mathematics and Related Fields

These databases will be most helpful for math research. Journal articles and essays (book chapters) can be found searching these.

Accessing databases from off-campus

From off-campus, log-in to the databases using your TIU username and password. This is what you use to log into your Trinity email, myTIU, and Moodle. If you need help with your password, contact IT.
