AMA Style

AMA is the style of the American Medical Association and is published as the AMA Manual of Style: A Guide for Authors and Editors. A copy may be found in the library at R119 .A533 2007. AMA style is followed primarily by the sciences at Trinity.

How is AMA different from MLA or APA?

  • Don't use the author’s last name for the in-text citations
  • Number each instance when you are referencing an article. (in the order with which you use that reference within your paper.) 
  • Use commas to separate multiple citation numbers in text
  • Unpublished works and personal communications should be cited in the text (and not on the reference list)
  • Superscript numbers: placed outside periods and commas; inside colons and semicolons
  • When citing the same source more than once, give the number of the original reference, then include the page number (in parentheses) where the information was found.
