ELH: English Literary History
This journal, edited by the literature faculty at Johns Hopkins U, typically releases articles that are at once traditional in their basis on canonical texts and cutting edge in their integration of current approaches in English. By contrast, excellent journals such as Representations (U of California) and Critical Inquiry (U of Chicago) are more cutting edge but less tied to the canon.

PMLA: Publications of the Modern Language Association
This journal includes not just first-rate articles but also forums that discuss issues of interest to the professional field of English, such as “How We Write Now” (Jan. 2018).

SEL: Studies in English Literature, 1500-1900
This journal is perhaps best known for its annual omnibus reviews of all the major books published the previous year in 4 sub-periods of literature: Renaissance literature, Renaissance drama, the eighteenth century, and the nineteenth century.
