Lost Item Fees at TIU:  When an item is 30 days overdue it is considered lost. Your account will be billed automatically a $25 Lost Item Processing fee, plus a $100 Lost Item Replacement fee. For TIU students, when the material is returned these fees will be waived and you will only be liable for the overdue fines that have accumulated. For other I-Share students, when the material is returned the Lost Item Replacement fee will be waived, but the Lost Item Processing fee will remain on your account and you will be responsible for paying this fee.

Patrons are responsible for materials they have checked out. If an item is truly lost, the items will billed to your student account on the following scale:

  • Cost of item plus $25 processing fee for items still in print
  • $100.00 fee per item for which a replacement cannot be found plus a $25.00 processing fee.
  • Replacement of a TIU cassette: $10.00 plus a $25.00 processing fee.

Items from Other Libraries

  • For items requested through I-Share, overdue fines are not assessed. However, once an item is determined to be Lost (30 days after the due date) Lost Item Replacement Fees are assessed, determined by the lending library.

  • For items requested through WorldShare overdue fines are not assessed. However, once an item is 3 weeks overdue it is considered Lost and will be billed $125, in addition to any lost/replacement fees assessed by the lending library. When the item is returned, all fines/fees will be waived.

Appealing a TIU Fine

All appeals must be submitted within 28 calendar days from the fine notice date. To submit an appeal, fill out the Rolfing Library Fines Appeal Form. The Fines Appeal Committee will answer all appeals within 3 business days. The decision made by the committee is final.

Decisions are based on a clear and concise statement provided by the patron, in addition to the patron's library record, previous appeals made by the patron, the total amount due on the account, and any other information that is relevant to the appeal. It is very important to be specific with details of the appeal.

All reasonable concerns related to library charges will be considered; however, the following are NOT considered reasons on which an appeal can be based:

  • Lack of understanding of library circulation policies
  • Due date reminders and Fine notices are sent as a courtesy. Non-receipt of a notice is not a valid reason for appeal
  • Forgetting due dates (due dates are accessible via My Account)
  • Disagreement with the library fine/fee structure
  • Inability to pay fines/fees
  • Materials loaned to a third party
  • Materials returned to a wrong library
  • Out of town, vacation, exams, academic breaks, etc...
